Kenilworth Castle
My interest in Kenilworth Castle was purely romantic—I wanted to visit the former home of the 14th century John of Gaunt, for whom I’d long harboured an historic affection. The castle was built and occupied from the 12th through 16th centuries, but destroyed in the 17th during the first English Civil War. It is now a remarkable ruin, with high red sandstone walls and vacant windows. You can wander the windy remnants of its majestic halls, and imagine something of the magnificent court that once occupied it.
